Superfoods: Home-made Golden Turmeric Paste

Golden paste has become very popular amongst pet owners and many people have also started taking it themselves for various health problems. The golden paste mainly consists of turmeric which is an herb used by indians for thousands of years. Curcumin is the compound in turmeric which gives it the yellow colour and also all the health benefits, it works as an anti-inflammatory and is filled with antioxidants. It is also said to be able to stop environmental toxins from turning into carcinogens in the body. Although not many studies have been done, turmeric users have had great experience using turmeric golden paste for acne, asthma, gastrointestinal issues, arthritis, insomnia and diabetes.

It is very easy to find all the ingredients for the golden paste in Abu Dhabi. I got organic turmeric powder from Organic foods and cafe in Nation tower, they offer 20% off all products (except for make up and supplements) every 3rd Saturday of the month. Normal turmeric powder is available at most supermarkets for around 10 dirhams/500grams. I prefer to buy organic turmeric, as herbs from India may have a dangerously high lead content.

Some turmeric may contain artificial colouring or fillers, so I decided to test Sonnentor’s turmeric sold at Organic foods and cafe (right) and normal turmeric (left) bought from Lulu. I filled a glass with water and sprinkled 1 tsp of turmeric powder on top, after 20 minutes most of the turmeric was at the bottom of the glass and the water was clear. In case of artificial colour or fillers the water would have been cloudy. This does not indicate the quality of the turmeric, but shows that the turmeric itself is pure.

goldenpaste8aUsually I prefer the fresh version of herbs, fruits and vegetables but when it comes to turmeric the powder is a lot more powerful and beneficial. Fresh rhizome is sold at some of the hypermarkets in the U.A.E. and it’s great for cooking, but to get all of the benefits of turmeric it is better to get the dried and boiled version. When eating raw turmeric it goes through the intestine too fast to be broken down, so the curcumin never becomes available to the body.

goldenpaste1aI get my organic coconut oil from Mawasim, which is the cheapest I have found in the U.A.E. When fat is added to turmeric it increases the bodies ability to absorb all the nutrients, another option would be to add olive oil.

The piperine in black pepper increases the ability of the body to absorb the turmeric better. It is important to use freshly ground pepper and not powder. Black pepper corns are available at most supermarkets.

1/2 cup turmeric powder
1 cup water
1/3 cup organic coconut oil
1.5 tsp freshly ground black pepper

I added 1 cup of water into my pot and waited until it was boiling, I then added 1/2 cup of turmeric while stirring over gentle heat until it formed into a thick paste. Turmeric should be cooked for a minimum of 10 minutes, if the paste is too thick another cup of water can be added. The reason for turmeric having to be cooked is that the heat breaks down the rigid matrix in which the turmerics starches are held in. All of this helps making the turmeric more available to our bodies.

turmericAfter the water and turmeric turned into a thick paste I turned off the stove and put the paste into my blender. I added 1.5 tsp freshly ground pepper and 1/3 cup of organic coconut oil and mixed it until it turned into a smooth paste.

turmeric3ab.jpgThe golden paste will last around 10-14 days in the fridge, but I personally prefer to freeze it making it easier to swallow. I fill the paste into a food freezer tray, which I purchased on iherb. I cut all the cubes into smaller pieces and store them in a glass jar in the freezer. Some people also choose to freeze them in portion sizes, but I do not have enough space for that in my freezer. Another way to avoid the turmeric taste would be to fill the paste into vegetable capsules. For 10% off your iherb order use code RDD731.

The starting dose for humans is 1/4 tsp of turmeric twice a day, but there is no strict dosage by weight. For dogs 1/8 to 1/4 twice a day with food and for horses 1 teaspoon twice a day daily with food. Depending on what effect you are looking for you may want to increase the dose slowly. I take 1 tsp a day as a health supplement, not for any particular pain or issues.
There are some possible side effects, but most turmeric users do not face any issues at all. Possible side effects include stomach problems, nausea, sweating. Some dogs may start smelling like cat urine, but adding a teaspoon of cinnamon to the golden paste usually helps with this.

turmeric3aI personally do not find the taste of golden paste very pleasant, some people enjoy it in their smoothies, soups or diluted in warm water as tea, although it is said that eating turmeric on an empty stomach is more beneficial.

  1. I have heard good things about turmeric and saw a recipe in pinterest for making turmeric tea but this is way simpler. i don’t like its taste but I would like to include it in my diet as daily supplement to help with my cholesterol. If I make the paste, can i put 1 tsp of this paste on a glass of water and drink instead? Would this be okay? Thank you
